This month you can support a great cause by donating to one of our Hoops4Schools Challenge teams – or join this fun Challenge and help raise funds with us!
Commencing soon, on August 16 2024, the Hoops4Schools Challenge will take aim at the urgent issue of education disengagement in Australia. For 20 days, participants will sink hoops daily to spotlight the 20% of teenagers disengaged from mainstream education.
“Education is a game changer, said Lee Aitken, CEO of The BUSY School.
“Hoops4Schools is a fantastic opportunity to get active, connect with others, and build a team to raise awareness and make a difference. With one in five teens disengaged from school due to various challenges—such as stressful life events, bullying, academic difficulties, anxiety, or illness—this initiative is crucial.”
Hoops4Schools is an initiative of The BUSY School, who provides an alternative learning environment for Year 11 and 12 students. In response to the increasing number of students struggling in traditional settings, The BUSY School offers an alternative, supportive and innovative approach to education. The schools offer no fees and uniforms, textbooks and laptops are provided.
Hoops4Schools is a dynamic fundraising and corporate event. Participants can engage in the challenge, raise awareness, and raise funds for The BUSY School either individually or in teams. Businesses are also invited to join the one-day Corporate Challenge on September 6, held on the Gold Coast.
“Our focus is on ensuring more young people complete their education and find meaningful employment, leading to positive community change,” Aitken added.
In 2024, the goal is to enlist over 1,000 participants and raise $80,000 for The BUSY School. The funds will support students, staff, and programs for alternative learning solutions, expanding engagement in communities across Australia.
Did you know it is estimated that each disengaged student costs the Australian taxpayer $1.1m in social costs across their lifetime? Besides supporting young people towards a better future, these social impacts and costs are yet another reason to reengage young people with education.
