Are younger generations unfairly labelled as ’lazy’ or, in a faster-paced world than ever before, are they simply projecting their own challenges with transition to adulthood?
For too long, Gen-Z has been given a bad rap sheet by older generations. We believe it’s time to re-evaluate that narrative and take responsibility when it comes to guiding young people to find their sense of purpose.
In our ultra-connected world, easily accessed knowledge can create the impetus for young people to be highly driven by values. At The BUSY School, we regularly witness young people searching for their purpose, and we believe it is our role to simply operate in a way to help them discover it.

The BUSY School’s approach
“Students don’t just need to learn—they need to feel connection,” says Hanna Green, Head of Teaching, Training and Learning at The BUSY School. “They genuinely appreciate their teachers here, as we move away from the traditional authoritative approach. Instead, teachers meet students where they are, guiding them with visionary leadership that opens their eyes to new possibilities. This makes all the difference in helping students discover their future.”
As Adam Jacobs, founder of online fashion retailer, THE ICONIC and co-founder of Hatch, a new venture whose mission is for all people to find meaning in work. says, “To hire a great team, you need to know what you stand for.” For Gen-Z, this holds true. A 2021 Ernst & Young survey found that nearly two-thirds of Gen-Z individuals seek employers who share their values. They’re fueled by purpose and are shaping the future of work.
The BUSY School taps into this sense of purpose with innovative education and workforce programs. “Our students thrive when they feel supported,” says Bill Weigall, General Manager of The BUSY School. “We don’t just provide an alternative education, we give students a sense of purpose. We show them their place in the world and the workforce.”
The BUSY School is all about creating real career pathways. Through work experience and apprenticeships, students get hands-on exposure to different industries. “Gen-Z doesn’t want a career handed to them on a list,” explains Jay Harris, Head of Industry and VET Engagement. “Our students want to explore and try. Our programs provide that chance, helping them make informed choices.”
Mental health is also a top priority for Gen-Z. They want safe, supportive environments that value well-being. The BUSY School ensures its students are not just academically prepared, but feel emotionally and mentally supported. “We are calling on businesses to step up,” says Weigall. “Our students leave with skills, but mentoring and investing in them is key to their success.”
The BUSY School’s Pathway Program connects students with businesses, offering hands-on learning and work experience. With 87 percent of students graduating with a vocational training certificate, they’re ready to step confidently into the workforce.
“Your passion for mentoring Gen-Z will be transformative,” adds Weigall. “We need values-based cultures that empower and engage young people.”
Generation Z is not just entering the workforce—they’re reshaping it. They demand purpose-driven workplaces that prioritise mental health and values. Let’s recognise their potential and support our youth to lead positive change.
