Love of People: The Heartbeat of Happiness and Service

Love of People: The Heartbeat of Happiness and Service

February is often celebrated as a time for romantic love but the essence of love runs deeper and broader than simply cards and gifts of flowers or chocolates to our love interests. In its purest form, true love is a connection that unites humanity through compassion, kindness and generosity.

The word philanthropy itself translates to ‘love of people,’ a profound reminder that acts of service and generosity are rooted in an enduring affection for others. This love uplifts, empowers and creates meaningful change in communities.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies on happiness, affirms this truth. Over 85 years of research reveal that “good relationships keep us happier and healthier,” as noted by study director Robert Waldinger. Beyond personal relationships, this principle extends to the connections we foster through acts of service. “Helping others not only transforms lives but also gives us greater purpose,” Waldinger explains.  (Credit: Harvard )

At The BUSY School, the philosophy of ‘love of people’ comes alive daily. Teachers, Principals and support staff exemplify this love in their unwavering dedication to young people. By fostering respect, nurturing potential, and cultivating a sense of belonging, they transform education into an act of service that changes lives.

As Executive General Manager Bill Weigall puts it:

“When we show young people that they belong, that they matter, and that their dreams are worth pursuing, we light a spark that can carry them through the most challenging times. This isn’t just a theory—it’s our daily reality at The BUSY School, where every small act of kindness, every word of encouragement, and every shared moment of connection builds bridges to brighter futures.”

For students who have disengaged from traditional schooling—the ‘love of people’ becomes a lifeline, offering them belonging, opportunity and hope.

This February, we invite you to embrace the true spirit of philanthropy by making Valentine’s Day about the love of people. Support young individuals on their educational journeys and help rewrite the stories of students in need.

Whether you’re part of a corporate team, community group or an individual looking to make a meaningful impact, this is your chance to embody the essence of philanthropy and foster lasting change.

The Harvard study reminds us, “Happiness is love. Full stop.” This love doesn’t have to be romantic—it thrives in generosity, shared humanity, and a belief in each person’s potential. By choosing to support others, we create a ripple effect: a student who feels seen and supported gains confidence, confidence leads to success and success inspires others.

Through the love of people, through philanthropy, together we can spread kindness, build stronger communities and create a brighter future for all.
