Support The BUSY School

Mainstream schooling isn’t for every student, and that was the experience for Kaylee who had become disengaged and struggled with attendance. All that changed though when Kaylee enrolled in The BUSY School Southport Girls + campus.

At The BUSY School, Kaylee was supported to pursue her career goal and passion to become a cattle farmer. Inspired by her grandfather, a cattle farmer in Bundaberg, Kaylee’s love of the great outdoors and her strong affinity for animals meant she found a natural fit with agricultural life.

The BUSY School tailors learning plans for each student, to suit their interests and career goals. Many students undertake school-based apprenticeships or traineeships, work experience or outside studies to explore career pathways, and these complement their learning and future work ambitions. Kaylee is grateful that, while attending school and completing her QCE, she is also undertaking a Certificate II in Rural Operations which forms part of her school curriculum. This qualification has many pathways into agriculture and Kaylee will be concentrating on cattle farming.

Kaylee said of her career pathway choice, “My grandfather inspired me as he has a farm in Bundaberg, and I can go in the school holidays and help out. The BUSY School has supported me as they assist with transport to the practicals and give me the time off school to do that, along with the theory work.

“It’s a great pathway into the Agricultural industry because when I have completed the certificate, I can then look for a traineeship.”

Kaylee is undertaking her qualification at a University of Queensland campus, a real working farm, sitting on 1068 hectares of prime agricultural land. Some of her learning will include handling livestock, basic agricultural techniques, mustering and moving livestock, operating tractors, maintenance of machinery, environmentally sustainable work practices, propagation activities, maintaining nursery plants and operating multi-rotor remote pilot aircraft systems. Kaylee is really enjoying the qualification and hands-on learning. A ‘glamorous’ cowgirl, she’s also still maintaining her nails and eyelashes in the process!

Kaylee said of her learning experience, “The facilities are exactly like a real farm, the other students are friendly and there’s two other girls there as well!”

Agriculture pathways aren’t for everyone and Kaylee’s parting advice to other high schoolers looking at a career in agriculture is, “Make sure you get some work experience and knowledge before starting out on your journey – I was lucky to have my grandfather to work with.”
