Why Hobart needs a school like this

For a lot of young people, completing Years 11 and 12 can feel overwhelming or even impossible. Not because of who they are, but because the environment doesn’t suit them, the content doesn’t connect and the path forward isn’t clear. If you’re a young person whose education hasn’t felt like the right fit, or a parent or carer watching someone you love disengage from school, you should know there are other options. The BUSY School is one of them, and we are working to bring it to Tasmania.

What is The BUSY School?

The BUSY School is a Special Assistance School for young people in Years 11 and 12. That’s the official description. Here’s the human one: it’s a school that has been built differently, for young people who need it to be.

Smaller classes. Teachers who actually get to know you. A curriculum that connects to real life and real careers. A place where completing Year 11 and 12 becomes possible, regardless of the path that got you there. A school that helps you explore and get excited about your future.

The BUSY School is part of The BUSY Group, a for-purpose organisation that has been supporting young people into education, training and employment for almost 50 years. Our schools operate across Australia and internationally, and every one of them is built on the same belief; that with the right environment, every young person can find their path forward.

Completing Year 11 and 12 opens doors. We believe every young person deserves a path that actually works for them.

Why Hobart?

There is a community of young people, families and support workers in greater Hobart who are looking for more options in senior secondary education, particularly for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling or who are at risk of doing so.

We also know that the sooner a young person finds an environment that works for them, the better their outcomes at school and beyond. With ten campuses in Queensland and one in New Zealand, we’re already successfully supporting thousands of young people to complete school and find their career path. We’re also about to open a campus this year in Calgary, Canada.

Work is underway to bring The BUSY School to Hobart, and we want to stay connected with the people this school is being built for. Register your interest below and we will keep you informed every step of the way.

Who is The BUSY School for?

The BUSY School is designed for young people who are:

  • In Years 11 or 12, or approaching that stage
  • Disengaged from mainstream school, or finding it increasingly hard to stay engaged
  • Looking for smaller class sizes and a more personal learning environment
  • Interested in vocational pathways and career-connected learning
  • Ready to complete their secondary education, in a way that actually works for them

What makes it different?

A few things set The BUSY School apart from a mainstream secondary school.

The first is size. Our schools are intentionally small, so teachers can actually know their students. Not just their names but their goals, their strengths and any obstacles in the way.

The second is focus. The BUSY School has a strong emphasis on vocational outcomes. That means a curriculum that connects to real industries and real employment pathways, not just assessments for the sake of it.

The third is culture. We work hard to create an environment where completing Years 11 and 12 feels normal and achievable for young people who may not have felt that way before. Because it is.
